The City of Johannesburg has approved the Greater Zandspruit Framework.

Speaking about the significance of this action, Themba Mathibe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Johannesburg Development Agency said the approval is a step towards turning the area into a vibrant and resource-efficient precinct.

He said the framework updates and refines the 2008 urban development framework (UDF), integrates critical planning considerations such as infrastructure development, economic growth, housing provision, and environmental sustainability.

Several key nodes, including the Northgate Regional Node, Laser Park Industrial Node, and Kya Sands Industrial Node, have been identified as catalysts for economic and spatial transformation.

Mathibe also said “the approval of the Zandspruit Urban Development Framework is a testament to the JDA’s dedication to advancing sustainable, well-integrated urban environments.
Through our collaboration with urban planners, engineers, environmentalists, and community participation consultants, we have developed a framework that balances economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity. This approval paves the way for infrastructure investments, improved public amenities, and enhanced economic prospects for the residents of Zandspruit.”
