Julius Malema, EFF leader, was sentenced to five years in prison, for firing shots at the party’s fifth year celebration, in Mdantsane.

Malema was taken to court by AfriForum who laid criminal charges against him in August 2018.

He was convicted on the 1 October 2025, for the illegal possession of a firearm, firing shots in public, and reckless endangerment.

Judge Olivier sentenced him to five years in prison, for the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic firearm.

In addition, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, for the unlawful possession of ammunition.

Olivier imposed a fine of R20 000, or six months’ imprisonment, for the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a built-up area.
