About 100 informal homes were gutted down by a fire in Cape Town’s Masiphumelele, near Kommetjie, in the early hours of Monday morning, days before Christmas.

JP Smith, the Provincial MEC for Safety and Security gave an account of the incident via social media.

“At 04h48 this morning, a distressed call was received by the public, for a fire that had broken out in the Masiphumele informal settlement. Crews were scrambled, with the first crew arriving on scene at 04h53… just five minutes after the first call had been received.”

14 firefighters found the fire was already well underway and spreading fast, upon arrival at the scene.

More resources added, resulted in over 70 firefighters battling the blaze.

Various NGOs on site assisting the victims, are Gift of the Givers, Tears Animal Rescue and the SPCA are treating injured animals from the fire.
