A landslide following heavy rainfall, left about a thousand people dead, in the village of Tarsin, West of Sudan’s Darfur.
Mohamed Kamal, Plan International Sudan’s Country Director, said “this terrible landslide has hit a remote, mountainous area where many had fled seeking safety from conflict, claiming hundreds of lives. Heavy rains continue to fall as we speak, compounding an already dire humanitarian situation caused by conflict, flooding and mass displacement, which has put children and families at grave risk.”
Kamal also said this latest disaster has worsened the challenges facing children in that country.
According to a survey conducted by Relief International, 1 in 3 children are acutely malnourished in Melit, placing an estimated 6,500 children under the age of five, at risk of severe illness and death.
This is more than double the World Health Organisation (WHO) average.
