The Eastern Cape Provincial Government and the United Nations signed a Joint Declaration on Cooperation (JDI), on Wednesday.

The two will collaborate on agriculture and food security, climate change resilience and natural resource management, education, governance, leadership, health and economic development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Oscar Mabuyane, Premier of the Easter Cape, said “by signing the Eastern Cape–UN Joint Declaration on Cooperation (JDI), we are planting a seed. Its fruits may not appear overnight, but with integrity, commitment, and accountability, future generations will harvest its benefits.”

The partnership is expected to provide the province with much needed global expertise and resources to drive growth.

Mabuyane also said the partnership with the UN, is expected to create a province where children can survive and are educated, young people are skilled and economically empowered, women are safe and free, and traditional knowledge is harmonized with human rights and dignity.

Nelson Muffih, United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Africa, said the goal is to create “a province where early warnings reach everyone and drive action to prevent disasters, and where energy schemes and jobs are created.”
