City Power confirmed that all materials required for repairs, was delivered on site.
This follows a widespread electricity outage, since smoke was detected on Monday, bellowing out of the Fordsburg Substation.
The local power utility said high-voltage cables were also successfully layered, and technical teams commenced the jointing process.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said supply was restored to affected customers supplied through Reuven and Hursthill, as well as 10% of customers supplied via the Von Brandis Distributor under the Inner City SDC.
The remaining outage is at Bree Substation.
Work is expected to take an estimated eight days, with full restoration expected around the 3 September 2026.
Affected areas are in the Johannesburg CBD, Newtown and Hillbrow, including key customers such as FNB, Joburg Water at Turbine Hall, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, CBD Investments, Junction Mall, the South African Reserve Bank, the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Luthuli House, Independent Newspapers and the Johannesburg Land Company.
City Power also restored electricity supply to Tshepisong in Roodepoort, after threatening to withdraw from the township due to acts of sabotage, widespread illegal electricity connections, and repeated unlawful reconnection of infrastructure.
Charles Tlouane, Acting CEO of City Power, said technical restoration and maintenance services are underway in Tshepisong.
“Our actions is Tshepisong and elsewhere in the city where we have been forced to embark of drastic measures are driven by the pressing need to ensure sustainability of our operations. They are never punitive and we fully recognize our sworn business mandate of keeping the lights on for every resident of Johannesburg” said Tlouane.
