The City of Johannesburg settled the R5.25 billion, electricity debt owed to Eskom.

Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, and Dada Morero, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, jointly announced the news on Friday.

This follows an intervention and mediation process by Ramokgopa, between the City, and Eskom, to resolve the long-standing billing dispute.

Eskom also confirmed receipt of the settlement on Friday.

“We are pleased to see this matter reach a definitive conclusion. This resolution reinforces the effectiveness of the Inter-Governmental Relations (IGR) model we have championed. By maintaining an open dialogue and a structured task team, we have ensured that the residents and businesses of Johannesburg continue to receive an uninterrupted power supply while safeguarding the financial sustainability of our national utility” said Ramokgopa.

Morero said “this is a significant milestone in the City’s journey towards financial sustainability and responsible governance.”
