The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal birds (SANCCOB) released 19 African Penguins to Simon’s Town beach, this week.
A veterinarian at the SANCCOB, spoke about the process of determining how rehabilitated Penguins are readied for release.
“We start with a full body check, to determine weight and hydration” she said.
This includes checking that lungs are clear, feet and mouth, against possible injuries and illnesses.
“We also confirm that they are waterproof. Because they have to be fully waterproof before release” she said.
They also check if they have a transponder. If they don’t, one is inserted, because it tracks their movements.
On release day, they are fed their favourite snack-fish and placed in boxes.
SANCCOB said every injured seabird that arrives, has a story.
