Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala, Mayor of uThukela District Municipality, visited part of the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, to inspect water infrastructure.

This is part of outcomes of a recently held local water summit, held in uMnambithi/Ladysmith.

Shabalala said in a statement some if the resolutions of the Summit, are to work closely with stakeholders.

He also said a site visit in Mhlungwini and Bhekabezayo areas, revealed water shortages were as a result of stolen electric panels.

“This led to the reservoir to run dry, sparking community concerns. These production boreholes feed into the reservoir that supplies water to Bhekabezayo and Ezinyosini. The Al Imdaad Foundation will do the repairs on these boreholes so that people are able to access water supply.”

Shabalala also said “we have taken a decision to come and see for ourselves, the progress made so far and challenges encountered. We are here with our social partners, the Al Imdaad Foundation because we have asked them to equip our production boreholes with the pump at a very low cost. We have also looked at another borehole where the pump was removed, so the Foundation will also be replacing it.”

The construction of elevated steel tank in Mdwebu was completed, and now needs to be connected to the main pipeline that runs from the production borehole, to restart supply.
