About 3% of growth in mining, could add R65 billion to South Africa’s GDP.
In addition, this could support up to 100,000 more jobs by 2035.
This is according to Paul Dunne, President of Minerals Council South Africa, who spoke at the JoburgIndaba2026, on Tuesday.
The sector currently has R70 billion of committed and ready to go investments.
He also said mining exports amounted to R814 billion in 2015.
In addition to a partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the GBVF Response Fund, to combat GBV at mine-host communities, two new Thuthuzela Care Centres, to shelter abused women, are underway.
The centres are in partnership with Seriti Power Community Trust Fraser Alexander for the Kopanong hospital in Vereeniging and another in Thabazimbi, with Northam Platinum.
Mzila Mthenjane, CEO of the Minerals Council South Africa, said there is a collaborative effort between the Council and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), to unlock more than R50 billion in capital expenditure and accelerate investment in the sector.
He also said the Council is looking to partner with other sectors such as agriculture, in the minerals succession planning.
The plan is about repurposing mining assets beyond the life of mine, to the benefit nearby communities.
