Researchers at the Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology in Paraguay, suspect common severe storms during the Southern Cone’s spring transition, might have birthed chunky hail stones.

The stones, the size of a tennis ball, measured at between 2.5 to 3 inches, smashed car windscreens, tore off roofs, and led to power outages, at Luque, San Lorenzo, Lambaré, Villa Elisa and Ñemby.

Researchers say intense warm air inside a storm went up to cloud layers, where it froze into hail.

The amount of damage is still being tallied by authorities.
