Contractors are repairing a major main pipe destroyed during the floods of January 2026 in Phalaborwa.

Once completed, this main line is expected to restore water supply to the communities of Boelang, Maseke, and Mashishimale, as well as sections of Makhushane.

More rains (at Level 4) are expected in the area, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warning against disruptions over the lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces on Friday.

Merriam Malatji, the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality visited the site on Thursday, where a contractor is currently replacing the previous 200mm steel pipe, swept away by floodwaters, with a more resilient 250mm HDPE main pipe.

The Municipality also said the contractor is conducting site clearing and de-bushing in preparation for the installation of a concrete encasement to protect the new infrastructure.
