The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) launched the expanded Separation at Source Pilot Recycling Project in Motherwell, on Tuesday.
The NMBM Executive Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, said this project aims to decrease the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
She encouraged residents to view waste as a valuable resource, rather than a burden, as pickers can earn income from recyclables. The project also seeks to lower the carbon footprint within local communities.
Health professionals from the NMBM Public Health Directorate also used the occasion to educate the community about the benefits of recycling and the importance of participating in the project.
The Municipality is calling on residents to get involved, aiming for at least 10% participation to ensure there are enough resources for the collection of recyclables.
The pilot is in Bluewater, Motherwell, Swartkops, and Redhouse.
