Pemmy Majodina, Minister of Water and Sanitation, handed over the Mt. Ayliff Peri-Urban Water Treatment Works to the Alfred Nzo District Municipality on Wednesday morning.
The plant is located south of Kokstad in the Eastern Cape Province.
Studies prior to construction, began as far back as 2013.
This significant milestone represents a major step forward in addressing the persistent water challenges faced by communities in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality.
The plant has a capacity to supply 6 million liters a day, and the recent second upgrades, are expected to benefit Lubhalasi, Sontombe, Sigidini, Betshwana, Mombeni and Singeni villages.
In addition, the Mt. Ayliff Peri-Urban Bulk Water Project is expected to enhance the region’s water capacity and ensure a more resilient and dependable water supply system.
As part of the day’s activities, Majodina also engaged with key stakeholders in the water sector, including representatives from the Department of Water and Sanitation, Alfred Nzo District Municipality, and the newly established Amatola Water Board.
