Mop up operations are underway, in Gansbaai, in the Western Cape.

The fire has been burning for 8 days, engulfing an estimated 1800 hectares of land.

Dean O’Neill, Municipal Manager of the Overstrand Municipality, said “alien vegetation remains a serious problem and poses a significant challenge to effective fire management.”

He also encouraged landowners to develop an alien vegetation management plan for their properties and to establish and maintain proper firebreaks.

A thermal drone is expected to assess the area to identify hotspots.
