Some areas of Newtown and inner city Johannesburg have had no electricity since Worker’s Day, on the 01st May 2024.
The outage was caused by an underground fire, under the double-decker highway on the M1 in Johannesburg, on Worker’s Day.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said in a statement this morning that a 88kV cable was successfully installed.
He said, about 85% of affected areas by the outage are now nearly fully connected.
Power was restored to some areas in Parktown West, including Delorme West, Johnson, Ameshof, Wolmarans West, Showgrounds and Smith Street.
Mangena says another cable was successfully installed between Bree Substation and Newtown Junction.
“That cable has been livened up and customers such as Newtown Junction Mall, and surrounds, are due to be restored today.”
Customers in that area are requested to switch off all appliances to free up the network.
