The cable replacement project between Observatory and Bellevue High Tension (HT) was completed and a transformer reinstated.
City Power said this is a pivotal milestone in improving the region’s network infrastructure and service for inner-city residents and business.
This long-term project started in May this year, after a fire gutted the Observatory Substation in December 2023.
City Power teams installed temporary
relief for customers, through the installation of interconnector cables between Observatory and Bellevue substations.
Part of the long-term solution was to complete the rehabilitation of the substation and the installation of two new cables.
The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Jack Sekwaila, said he is pleased at the completion of this project.
“This critical emergency project of replacing two 88kV oil cables, is part of City Power’s plan of modernising and reinforcing the electrical network between Observatory and Bellevue Substations.
After the fire broke out in December 2023, damaging the Observatory substation and
its network, we presented short, medium and long-term plans to address the intermittent power supply challenges brought by that unfortunate incident” said Sekwaila.
He also said “we have delivered on all of those promises we made to our residents, starting with the installation of interconnector cables to completely rehabilitate the affected Substation.”
Prep work got underway last month, when City Power isolated the overhead lines between Observatory and Bellevue substations, for underground cable connections to the network.
