The N2 between Ndabakazi and the Kei Cuttings was closed on Tuesday evening, due to a road accident involving an oil tanker.
Unathi Binqose, Spokesperson of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, said the tanker lost control, overturned and spilt oil onto the road, creating extremely hazardous conditions for all road users.
As a result, the affected section of the road was closed until further notice to allow for emergency operations, clean-up processes and a full safety assessment of the area.
The Department appealed to all road users to avoid the area.
