The Western Cape Disaster Management Center was activated on the 22nd September 2023. Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell, said in a statement, all emergency, essential and safety structures are ready.
He said no recreational sea activities are recommended due to higher than usual waves and very strong winds.
He was responding to a severe weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Orange level 9 warning was issued over the Overberg, parts of the Garden Route and southern parts of the Cape Winelands Districts of Western Cape for 24-25 September 2023.
According to SAWS, weather expected includes widespread flooding, rainfall in excess of 100mm possible in some areas, full catchment that may cause further flooding downstream.
SAWS also said “we are keeping a close eye on the developing cut-off low. The cut-off low is expected to strengthen today and cause widespread heavy rainfall later today and tomorrow over parts of the Western Cape province. The Overberg region may see 24-hour rainfall totals in the order of 100-150mm in places.”
