The fire on the mountain slopes of Paarl is contained.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services confirmed this morning, that there were no injuries and destruction to nearby infrastructure as a result of the fire.
The fire began on Saturday, 30 November 2024, and burnt an estimated 123 hectares of mixed vegetation.
Firefighting teams completed a successful backburn on Sunday afternoon, which the Municipality said, aided the final operations to contain the last fire line on the right flank of the mountain.
The crews continued operations during the night and reported that there were still many areas where coals remained.
Fire vehicles and crew from the Cape Winelands’ Paarl and Stellenbosch stations will stay on scene, assisted by fresh ground crews from NCC, to continue with monitoring and mopping-up activities.
Resources mainly came from the Provincial Disaster Management Center, Drakenstein and Swartland Municipalities, Volunteer Fire Services, the Winelands FPA, contracted resources, Leading Edge Aviation, NCC, and Lewis Bush Clearing, Winelands Fire Protection Association, NCC Wildfires Leading Edge Aviation and South Africa Volunteer Wildfire Service.
