Certain areas of the Johannesburg city centre, still have no electricity, following the rehabilitation of underground cables that were damaged by a fire.
Although the underground fire incident occurred on Saturday, the 31 May, 2025, City Power said two more cable joints were connected over the weekend.
Four cable joints were successfully connected, on Saturday, resulting in power restored in Kerk East, Van Brondis, Jeppe East, Loveday, Pritchard, President, Newton Junction and the New Stock Exchange.
City Power’s Isaac Mangena, said “in the past few days, our teams have been working on finding alternative methods to reinstate power supply following the outage.”
He also said the cables will be energised and left to float overnight without immediately restoring supply to customers, to monitor insulation performance, identify any faults, and confirm system integrity under no-stress conditions.
Areas awaiting full power restoration are Bank City, De Villiers and surrounding streets.
