The first phase of the Lilian Ngoyi rehabilitation is on track, to be completed at the end of August 2025.

About 450 metres of the road,  collapsed due to a gas explosion, between Harrison and Kruis Streets, back in July 2023.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said on Tuesday, despite recent adverse weather, an Acceleration Plan was implemented, to ensure construction remains on schedule.

Lufuno Mashau, Acting CEO of the JRA said “beyond the visible construction, this crucial project involves the complex reinstallation and relocation of stormwater, water and sewer pipes. Furthermore, we are installing new lighting, smoke detection and ventilation systems in the service tunnels…”

Mashau also said once completed, the section of the road under maintenance, will have a newly constructed surface, expanded sidewalks, vendor spaces and an upgraded bus stop.

The second phase of the project, between Ntemi Philiso and End Street, is expected to begin in September 2025.
