An electronic waste or eWaste programme was launched  nationwide in sunny Rustenburg, on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to test and implement a sustainable system for the recycling of e-waste across the country.

Ahead of today’s launch, the Department requested residents to bring their old and unused electronic and electrical waste, such as cell phones, computers, televisions, and other electrical appliances, to the Imbizo for recycling.

Speaking at the launch event, Bernice Swarts, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the environment, said “today marks a milestone in our journey towards creating a more sustainable environment. This initiative is a key part in demonstrating our commitment to tackling one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges: electronic waste.”

Swarts also said although the initiative is a step in the right direction, it is only the beginning.

“Achieving long-term success in managing eWaste requires continued efforts from all stakeholders, government, industry, and communities.”

eWaste contains harmful materials such as lead, mercury, and many other toxic chemicals, which can have devastating effects on the environment and health, if left unmanaged.

Sheila Mabale-Huma, the Executive Mayor of Rustenburg Local Municipality and Bitsa Lenkopane- MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, in the North West, were also at today’s launch.
