uMngeni-uThukela Water urges the public to avoid crossing the Hlimbithwa and Umvoti Rivers rivers as well as low-lying bridges, on Friday, the 24th January 2025.
This is due to a planned release of water from the Mvutshane dam, in Maphumulo, to the Hlimbithwa and Umvoti Rivers.
This will be done until water in the dam is at 70% full, from its current 75%.
The Mvutshane Dam has to be maintained at between 70% and 80 % of its total capacity.
The uMngeni-uThukela Water Board said recent heavy rains have contributed to the rise in the level of water.
Water is expected to be released this morning, Friday, 24 January 2025, at 10am.
The released water is expected to swell up the Hlimbithwa and Umvoti Rivers.
“We further urge communities to safeguard any property, including livestock, located on riverbanks, while the water releases are in progress” said the Water Board.
