Police found abalone with an estimated street value of R130 000, hidden near Gate 1 at Noordhoek along Marine Drive, on Wednesday.
Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, Acting District Commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay, explained that police and divers from a private security company, found six waist bags concealed between rocks in shallow water.
The bags had a total of 1,048 units of abalone.
About 965 of the total amount were deshelled and 83 were shelled abalone.
He also said police made no arrests but investigations continue.
“Every successful recovery disrupts the illegal wildlife trafficking network and prevents our marine resources from being exploited for criminal gain. We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners to protect South Africa’s natural resources and bring those responsible for environmental crimes to justice” said Ngalo.
