Residents in parts of Parktown West now have power, after they were requested to switch off plugs of all appliances yesterday.
This as City Power prepared to restore power supply, subsequent to an underground fire under the double-decker, M1 highway.

The outage was caused by a suspected act of vandalism and cable theft, which led to a fire in an underground tunnel, under the M1.

Electricity supply was restored to Empire Road, Yale Road, Service Road, Napier Street, Wabord Road, Workmans rehab center and John Oor technical.

Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson for City Power, said a new 88 Kilovolt (KV), was laid inside the burnt tunnel where cables were stolen. He said interconnector cables were laid between Fort Substation and Braamfontein Substation, and tests were conducted successfully.

Mangena said technicians are working hard to restore electricity to Braamfontein, Newtown, Johannesburg CBD.
