The City of Johannesburg said it will be opposing Eskom’s action to approach the courts.

It said it is taken aback by Eskom’s decision to approach the courts to force it to pay an amount of R1 billion, while the national power utility, owes the City about R3.4 billion in overcharges over the years.

Eskom said over the weekend, that it is in a strained financial situation because City Power started to default on payments back in October 2023.
It said the local power utility, is threatening its ability to maintain essential infrastructure, and its ability to meet Provincial demands.

Well, the City said it pays Eskom an amount of about R1 billion for electricity every month, and remains committed to pay for services rendered.
Another factor raised was that of overbilling, which City Power said in a statement, has led to a reimbursement of about R483 million, over the years.

“In our assessments, however, there is so much more that is still due to the City, and we have in our engagement with Eskom two weeks ago, proposed that we bring in an independent electricity expert to give them comfort, and the national power utility has been reluctant.”
