Eskom has taken City Power to court, a statement from Eskom confirmed yesterday.
The tussle is over an amount of about R1, 073 billion, owed to Eskom.
Eskom said yesterday that it is in a strained financial situation because City Power started to default on payments back in October 2023.
It said the local power utility, is threatening its ability to maintain essential infrastructure, and its ability to meet Provincial demands.
City Power lodged a dispute back in 2021 claiming over- billing by Eskom.
The hearing in court is scheduled for the 04th June 2024.
This action by Eskom, comes while Johannesburg residents await an outcome of an assessment of the extent of the damage caused by vandalized underground power cables last week. Fire broke under the double-decker highway on the M1, in what is suspected to be cable theft and vandalism.
Robinson Nqola from City Power, said City Power will respond officially to Eskom’s statement later today.
