A truck driver carrying cigarettes valued at R3.7 million, was arrested by police in Sedibeng, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
Police say they acted on a tip-off from Crime Intelligence regarding the white UD truck.
It allegedly transports illicit cigarettes from Gauteng towards QwaQwa via the R59 route, through Vereeniging and Sasolburg.
On Wednesday afternoon, the truck was spotted and stopped at a four-way stop on the R82 and R57, while heading to Sasolburg.
Police said large amounts of illicit cigarettes were recovered, including 439 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes, containing 25 packs each; 30 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes containing 50 packs each; 52 additional boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes containing 50 packs each; and 78 boxes of Chelsea cigarettes containing 50 packs each.
Two suspects, aged 60 and 43, were arrested for this.
