Several roads in Namakwa, part of the Northern Cape, remain closed, following last week’s floods and damaging winds.

The Department of Roads and Public Works said two roads were opened recently, including Rooipad / Kleinzee (DR2964) and Oorlogskloof / Nieuwoudtville (DR2276).

Roads still closed to traffic include the Calvinia / Western Cape Border (MR542), because it is wet and slippery. 

Motorists are urged not to remove road closure barriers or warning signage.

The Department said the Leliekrans / Middelpos (DR2274) is also closed, because it is severely eroded and is unsafe for travel.

The Houhoek (DR2293) was also eroded within about 13 km from Loeriesfontein.

The Department said in an update “motorists are requested to exercise extreme caution, comply with all road closure signs, and avoid affected routes where possible.

Similarly, the N12 between Oudtshoorn and George was opened on Thursday morning.

The Western Cape Provincial Government alerted the public that the road, which was  cleared sed due to rockfalls, is now safe.

The Garden Route District announced more than 21 roads remain closed in the Region.

Another 28 roads remain closed on the West Coast, including Jakaalskloof, Matjies River, Niewoudts Pass, Bosbou, Klein Doring River, Uilenkraal, Afguns Farm, Klipbank, Doornboom, Sonkwasdrift, Vredenburg landfill, Ou Kaapse Weg, Anysrug, Uitkyk Pass, Berg River Station, Skaapvlei, Koekenaap, Lutzville low water bridge, Vredendal to Vanrhynsdorp, Klawer bridge over Olifants River, Algeria Road, Moravia bridge, Warmbad, Urionskraal, Uitspankraal, Boskloof and Uitvlug.
