Residents staying close to areas worst affected by stock theft in Mpumalanga, at Engwenyameni, part of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality, were cautioned against buying cattle from the streets.
There are at least 569 counts of stock theft in Mpumalanga per quarter, according to the most recent crime statistics.
Speaking at an Anti-Stock Theft Campaign, organised by the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in collaboration with the KwaMhlanga Police Station on Wednesday, Lieutenant Colonel Freddy Sepogwane, from the Stock Theft Unit in KwaMhlanga Police Station, shared tips to curb theft, with residents.
“Stop buying cattle from people that you know are not farmers; and you must report immediately to the police if you notice suspicious movement of livestock” he said.
Sepogwane encouraged farmers to also form forums that will increase patrols in some areas.
He further urged them to count their livestock.
Farmers were also advised to look after their livestock and ensure that they are not grazing in areas where they could be stolen or or near the road where they could cause accidents.
They were also encouraged to brand their animals and also vett their herdsmen before hiring them.
