The Red Cross (SARC) urged members of the public to continue to support relief efforts, following this week’s heavy downpours.

Some 110,750 people from 22,146 were affected in Cape Town.

About 3,628 people were displaced by floods and are housed at community halls.  Some 2,200 of the total amount, are in the Winelands, 823 in the West Coast, 315 in the Overberg and 290 in the Garden Route.

The Red Cross said urgent needs are good parcels, non-perishables, blankets, mattresses, warm clothes, hygiene packs, baby care and clean water.

Molefe Takalo, Secretary General of the Red Cross, said “when disaster strikes, the strength of our humanity is tested, by how quickly and how compassionately we respond to those in need.”
