On Friday afternoon, Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch, Gesie van Deventer, joined people and organizations opposing Eskom’s proposed increase of 40%.

In a statement, van Deventer said he has officially written to the Chairperson of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to express strong opposition to Eskom’s proposed 40% tariff increase.

He said the increase would have a devastating impact on the poorest and most vulnerable members of our community, exacerbating existing challenges.

“This proposal threatens the economic stability and the well-being of our citizens, and we must stand together in voicing our concerns.”

Charles Hlebela, Spokesperson of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) said the Regulator has not even received Eskom’s final application for consideration.
He said a draft revenue application to guide the regulatory process was submitted.

“Once the final application has been submitted, NERSA will consider the application, publish it on its website, conduct the public participation process.”

He said NERSA is committed to transparency.
