The Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has welcomed the approval of the IMF’s Executive Board, to establish the first ever Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
Back in June, the Board approved a 30-month RSF arrangement, to strengthen the capacity of health emergencies and future pandemics.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, said “the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for new sources of financing to bolster health systems, to make them more able to prevent and detect epidemics and pandemics, and to respond when they strike.”
He also said the RST was actually established in 2022, with the aim to finance low and medium income countries to address climate change and challenges in preparing and responding to pandemics.
Thus far about USD 700 million was raised.
