South Africa’s population has officially exceeded 63 million. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) said this information emerged at its latest mid-year population estimates for 2024.

The country’s population grew by approximately 1,33% in a year, estimated at 835,513 people.

Fresh data shows just over half of the population, about 32 million people, are female.

More people live in the Gauteng Province, than anywhere else in the country.  Gauteng is home to nearly 16 million people.

KwaZulu-Natal follows with a population of 12,3 million.
This means, about 45% of South Africa’s total population live in Gauteng and KZN.
The, Northern Cape is the least populated province, housing just under 1,4 million people.

Diego Iturralde, Chief Director for Demographic and Population Statistics, at Statistics SA, said life expectancy has increased significantly, by at least 13 years, from 53,6 years in 2005 to a current 66,5 years.

He also said electricity generation increased by 2,3% in June compared with May.
Generation was up by 3,6% in the first 6 months of 2024 compared with the first 6 months of 2023.
