Scores of fish beached in the Hartenbos Estuary, early on Saturday morning, the 3rd January 2025.

The Municipality said scientists confirmed the cause to be critically low dissolved oxygen levels, in the system.

These levels were caused by an algal bloom, exacerbated by a combination of low water levels, elevated temperatures and nutrient‑rich conditions.

As a result, an emergency breaching of the mouth, was done, by an independent contractor, in accordance with the approved Estuary Mouth Management Plan.
