While several roads were reopened to traffic, some remain closed, such as the Long Tom Pass in Mpumalanga.
The road between Estcourt and Harrismith, is also closed, so is the one at Midmar/Howick as well as the Oliviershoek Pass (between Harrismith and Bergville).
The Dr AB Xuma Municipality, in the Eastern Cape, announced several barricaded roads, on Wednesday, including the R61 towards Cofimvaba and the R408 to Dutywa and R58 to Elliot.
Inclement weather also caused a widespread power outage, across KwaZulu- Natal, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo and the Free State.
Eskom said it has mobilised additional technical resources to restore electricity supply disruptions caused by severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, snowfall, strong winds and extreme cold.
Junaid Munshi, Distribution Group Executive at Eskom, said severe weather has damaged electricity infrastructure, caused multiple network faults and made several affected areas difficult or unsafe to access.
“In KwaZulu-Natal, electricity supply has been restored to most areas affected by outages experienced over the long weekend. Restoration work has been undertaken in Kokstad, Franklin, Nottingham Road, Underberg, Pietermaritzburg, Margate, Estcourt and Empangeni. Repairs are continuing in the remaining affected areas, while technicians remain on standby to access locations currently cut off by road closures” said Munshi.
In the Eastern Cape, electricity supply interruptions have affected several communities, with the Joe Gqabi and Alfred Nzo districts experiencing the greatest impact.
About 60% of affected customers now have electricity.
Restoration efforts continue in Limpopo, and the Free State.
Damaging winds at Level 2, are expected to continue over the northern parts of the West Coast district, and the Witzenberg Local Municipality of the Western Cape as well as the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape.
Very cold conditions and icy/slippery roads are expected to persist over Emalahleni, Sakhisizwe, Senqu, Elundini and Matatiele Local Municipalities of the Eastern Cape.
