A solar equinox is expected later in September, on the 22nd September 2024, when the sun will cross the equator.

The sun will be directly above the equator, signalling the start of an astronomical spring in the Southern Hemisphere, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Dr Angelo Hoorn, of the Severe Weather and Information Center SA, said although there are no storms expected in the next week, there was a new moon that rose on Tuesday.

As a result, higher than normal tides are expected to last another 5 days, into the weekend, as well as lower than normal low tides, stronger than normal rip currents.
