The City of Johannesburg celebrated the centenary of the Wilds Nature Reserve, this week.
Often referred to as “The Wilds” this area has a rich tapestry of natural beauty and history.

🌳The Wilds Nature Reserve is a 16-hectare reserve, located on the border between Killarney and Upper Houghton.
🌳The reserve has a landscape composed of koppies and foot trails, mostly used by runners, hikers, and tourists.
🌳The Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company donated the land to the City of Johannesburg in 1924 with the condition that it is kept in its natural state and open to the public. The land was donated because it was too steep to be used for residential property development.
🌳In January 1937, just after the end of the Empire Exhibition, a decision was made to plant trees on the landscape as a celebratory occasion for the city’s silver jubilee and coronation of King George VI.
🌳The park was then opened to the public in 1938, it had lawns, trails, ponds and waterfalls.
The Woods is 1 of 2, 183 Parks managed by the City of Johannesburg Parks and Zoo (JCPZ).
