Things turned violent on Monday in Thembisa, when police started firing rubber bullets, at protesters.

Residents organised a shutdown, to get the City to scrap a fixed electricity tariff of R126.

Residents barricaded roads with rocks and bricks, while Metro police blocked highways and main roads.

Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, Mayor of eKurhuleni,  Jongizizwe Dlabathi (MMC for Finance) and Mzayifani Ngwenya (MMC for Energy) along with Lelenki Lefakane (Thembisa Community Forum Chairperson) met protesters at the
Rabasotho Hall.

Later Xhakaza announced the fixed electricity tariff would be suspended.
