Residents of Randfontein in Johannesburg West, were left shocked by a tornado that blew roofs, smashed walls and gates on Wednesday, around lunchtime.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is still to confirm whether there was a tornado or not, in Randfontein, today (Wednesday).

A severe storm hit several homes in Toekomsrus, Mohlakeng, and surrounding areas.

Parts of Umphakathi shopping complex and a block of rental flats located near the mall were badly affected. Emergency crews are on site.

It is not clear how the newly constructed community health Centre was affected. The Gauteng Government said this week, once completed, this Centre would provide a 24 hour emergency service.

Although there are reports of an injured child, the Paramedics, SAPS and Firefighters are onsite to assess the situation.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to visit the site on Wednesday afternoon.

SPCAs said residents of Mohlakeng and Toekomsrus affected by the storm, should reach out for animals in need  (contact 0789110538).
