Dada Morero, Mayor of Johannesburg, is expected to lead tree planting in parts of Soweto on Friday.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) with the Mayor are expected to start in Meadowlands West, to plant trees there, to mark Arbor Month and to advance the City’s commitment to greening.

They are expected to proceed to Orlando West, around mid morning.

Joburg City Parks and Zoo said in a statement on Friday, “the activation forms part of the City’s ongoing drive to bridge the green divide, replenish the city’s ageing tree canopy and encourage residents to plant, protect and care for trees within their communities.”

The programme comes as Johannesburg celebrates international recognition for its greening efforts as part of the ‘Bridging the Green Divide’ initiative,  as a Highly Commended Finalist in the Living Green for Health and Wellbeing category of the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026, announced in Bari, Italy this week.
