Tropical cyclone Maila has been active in the Coral Sea.
Residents of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, are preparing for category 1 of sustained winds.
Dubbed Cyclone Maila, the tropical low system is expected to strengthen in the next few days, during the Easter weekend.
As a result, wind gusts are forecast at 200km/h and over 1000mm (possibly in excess of 1500mm) of rainfall.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said the system is located within 45 kilometres of 9.1 degrees South, 154.7 degrees East, 580 kilometres west of Honiara and 830 kilometres east of Port Moresby.
Maila is not expected to directly impact the Queensland coast before the middle of next week.
