Community trackers at the Virunga National Park, recorded two new mountain gorilla births in the Park, this week.
The Park said Nvunabandi of the Masibo family welcomed a baby boy, bringing the group to 16 members.
Kabila of the Nyakamwe family also gave birth to a male, and her family now has 18 members.
“That’s 15 births in the Mikeno sector of the Park, since January, a sign that protection is working, thanks to the teams on the ground” said the Park in an update.
The Bageni family now has 60 members, making it the largest known mountain gorilla troop on Earth. It is led by silverback Bageni, with a troop which includes a rare set of twins, born in January to Mafuko.
She keeps them close, grooming and feeding them, while the rest of the group keeps a distance.
