Two young rangers were killed on duty, on Thursday, at the Virunga National Park, at the ICCN post at Kamuhororo, on the southern shore of Lake Edward.

The two are Kasereka Valyathire Baraka (35) and Munguakonkwa Mihigo Jacques (34). 

They were killed by unidentified, heavily armed group of men.

The Park said the attack happened at a time when teams are under exceptional pressure to protect nature, during ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.

The ICCN’s Provincial Directorate in North Kivu called for an urgent investigation to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators and those who ordered this attack. 

The Park also said Kasereka Valyathire Baraka joined the ICCN in 2018 and served as a First Class Guard and Patrolman.

Munguakonkwa Mihigo Jacques, joined the ICCN in 2017 and served as a Senior Guard and Section Leader.

Both men left behind widows and two children each.
