An underwater earthquake was detected on Wednesday evening by the Severe Weather and Information Center SA.
It is recorded as a moderate earthquake, with a magnitude of about 5.3.

It occurred on Wednesday evening, Jan 3, 2024 20:07 (SAST).

“The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km and was not felt (or at least not reported so).”

Earthquakes are unusual in South Africa, but  there is at least 1 recorded every year, since 2019.

Other quakes recorded were in June 2023 (Gauteng),  November 2022 (KwaZulu-Natal), July 2021 (Gauteng).
In 2020, there were 4 in the Western Cape, in Cape Town (19:10) and in Paarl (20:41) on the 26th September, Durbanville on the 27th September and in Saldanha (17 November).
