An image shared by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), shows the Vredefort Dome, Free State, South Africa, from space.

The dome is located ~ 120 km south-west of Johannesburg, near the town of Parys and is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure.

The impact event dates back to some 2,023 million years ago, making this the oldest astrobleme found on Earth so far.

In this NASA image, the Vaal River runs through a semi-circular ring of mountains.

The Dome is a significant global heritage site, declared by UNESCO.
