The Rooikraal landfill site near Boksburg, was identified by the City to churn waste into energy.The plant generates a current 800 tons of waste per day, enough to generate 20 megawatts of power.
Mzayifani Ngwenya, Mayoral Committee (MMC)for the Energy portfolio in Ekurhuleni, met with a delegation representing China Harbour Engineering Company and FullSwing, an independent power producing company, this week.
The City said it expects Waste to Energy Projects to play an important role in not only reducing the waste at landfill sites, but also in providing an alternative energy source.
