South Africa (SA)ranks 42nd in the world’s friendliest countries, according to InterNations.

Mexico, tops the InterNations list, as the world’s friendliest country on the InterNations list, followed by Brazil, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The research company surveyed over 12,000 expats representing 171 nationalities and living in 172 countries/territories, back in 2023.

“Friendliness” is dependent on personal experience, making it possible to feel unwelcome in a friendly country or welcome in an unfriendly country.

However, when enough personal experiences were studies, emerging trends informed the outcome.

InterNations results also revealed hidden experiences at popular global destinations. “Some popular travel destinations such as the United Kingdom, France, and the United States fell into the ranks of the unfriendly or rude countries in the survey, placing 32nd, 39th, and 24th (out of 53), respectively.”

But a recent survey conducted by Remitly, an American online remittance service based in Seattle, United States, placed South Africa as the number 1 friendliest country in the world.

SA scored an impressive 34.63 out of 40 on the ‘agreeableness’ trait of the Big 5 Personality Test, followed by Greece (33.71).

About 3,000 participants from 27 countries around the world were tested on the ‘agreeableness’ trait of the Big 5 Personality Test, a globally recognised and standardised personality test.
