Overstrand firefighters are attending to a fire in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Dean O’Neill, Municipal Manager at Overstrand, said in an update at 7pm on Sunday evening, “at this stage, the fire is out of control due to very difficult conditions, including steep slopes and thick vegetation. The left flank is partially contained and teams are working towards the right flank.”
Overstrand Municipality and Overberg District Municipality (ODM) are actively fighting the fire, with assistance from the VWS ground team.
O’Neill also said crews will continue working throughout the night, if conditions allow.
More ground teams are on standby for tomorrow morning.
No injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the fire, and no damage to structures, wildlife or livestock.
